Austin School Fire Alarm Systems | Installation, Inspection, Monitoring & Repairs
Avenger Security Services / Security Tekton designs, installs, inspects, monitors, repairs and modernizes commercial fire alarm systems for schools throughout Austin and Central Texas. We support private schools, charter schools, K-12 campuses, preschools, educational facilities, gymnasiums, administrative buildings, portable buildings and multi-building school campuses.
School fire alarm work is not just about replacing a panel or testing devices. The complete system must match the occupancy, approved plans, adopted fire code, notification requirements, sprinkler interfaces, kitchen hood interfaces, access-control releases, monitoring requirements and the expectations of the Authority Having Jurisdiction.

Annual fire alarm inspections for schools in Austin
Austin Fire requires commercial fire-protection systems to be properly inspected and maintained, and applicable third-party inspection reports are submitted through The Compliance Engine. Fire alarm and detection systems are inspected and tested in accordance with the applicable NFPA 72 requirements by qualified personnel.
For a school, the annual contractor inspection is separate from a broader fire-marshal or facility inspection. A licensed fire alarm company tests the fire alarm system itself, while Austin Fire may also review the building's broader fire and life-safety condition, including exits, emergency lighting, extinguishers, sprinkler systems, kitchen suppression systems and current contractor inspection tags.
Important: A current fire alarm inspection tag does not necessarily mean the entire school has satisfied every fire and life-safety requirement. The school or building operator remains responsible for maintaining all required systems and correcting deficiencies identified by the local AHJ.
What we test during a school fire alarm inspection
- Fire alarm control panel condition and operating status
- Primary power, charging circuit and standby batteries
- Smoke detectors and heat detectors
- Duct detectors where installed
- Manual pull stations
- Horn/strobes and other notification appliances
- Remote annunciators
- Sprinkler waterflow and supervisory inputs where connected
- Kitchen hood fire-suppression interface where connected
- Elevator recall and related functions where applicable
- Approved access-control or door-release interfaces
- Central-station alarm, supervisory and trouble signals
- Visible system condition, labeling and documentation
Austin Fire inspection and contractor inspection are not the same thing
This distinction is especially important for schools. A licensed fire alarm contractor performs required testing of the fire alarm system. Austin Fire, as the local AHJ, performs fire and life-safety inspections and may review hazards and building conditions outside the fire alarm system itself.
School administrators should plan for both proper contractor inspection and maintenance and any separate Austin Fire inspection requirements applicable to the campus.
New fire alarm systems and school remodels
New construction, additions, renovations and certain fire alarm modifications may require Austin Fire plan review, permits, calculations and acceptance testing. Fire alarm submittals can include equipment data sheets, battery calculations, voltage-drop calculations, notification appliance information and system-specific documentation.
Before modifying an existing school system, we review the current panel, available capacity, existing circuits, approved drawings and renovation scope. Even a relatively small classroom remodel can affect initiating devices, notification appliances, circuit loading, ceiling layouts or required coverage.
Fire alarm panel replacement at a school
A failing or obsolete fire alarm panel does not automatically mean every field device must be replaced. Existing compatible wiring and devices can often be evaluated for reuse while the panel, communicator or power equipment is modernized.
- Obsolete or unsupported control panels
- Intermittent AC or internal power-supply faults
- Failed notification appliance circuits
- Ground faults and intermittent wiring problems
- Failed annunciators
- Obsolete fire alarm communicators
- Insufficient circuit or device capacity
- Repeated service problems that justify modernization
School fire alarm monitoring in Austin
Where monitoring is required or desired, Security Tekton can provide supervised commercial fire alarm monitoring through a UL-listed central station. Alarm, supervisory, trouble and restoration signals are processed according to the account's approved instructions.
Existing school systems can often be transferred from another monitoring provider without replacing the entire fire alarm system. We review the panel, communicator, communication path and programming before recommending a takeover.
Standard commercial fire alarm monitoring starts at $75 per month. Equipment, installation, permits, inspections and repairs are separate unless specifically included in a written proposal.
Cellular and IP communicator upgrades
Many schools still have fire alarm systems that originally depended on traditional telephone lines. If the fire alarm panel remains serviceable, the communication path may be modernized with a compatible cellular, IP or dual-path fire alarm communicator.
School fire alarm systems and access control
Modern schools often combine fire alarm, access control, visitor entry, intercom and video systems. These systems can interact, but they must be coordinated carefully.
- Release of approved electrically locked doors upon fire alarm
- Fire alarm interfaces to access-control systems
- Elevator recall initiated by designated fire alarm devices
- Door and gate behavior during emergency conditions
- Notification to staffed locations
Security cannot interfere with required egress. Fire alarm release logic, locking hardware and access-control behavior must follow the approved design and AHJ requirements.
For school access-control planning, see our Texas School Access Control Systems page.
School intercom and PA systems
Fire alarm notification and everyday school communication are separate system functions. A school may also need classroom intercom, visitor entry and PA/paging for daily operations.
For those applications, see our Aiphone IX | IXG School Intercom, Classroom Communication & PA Systems page.
An intercom or PA system should not automatically be treated as a substitute for a required fire alarm voice-evacuation or emergency communication system. Code-required emergency communication must be designed and approved for that purpose.
Common school fire alarm deficiencies
- Expired inspection tags
- Failed batteries
- Dirty or failed smoke detectors
- Damaged horn/strobes
- Open or shorted notification circuits
- Ground faults
- Disabled devices or circuits
- Failed monitoring communication
- Missing or inaccurate zone descriptions
- Unreported remodels or device changes
- Sprinkler supervisory or waterflow faults
- Kitchen hood interface problems
- Elevator recall interface problems
- Door-release interfaces that do not function correctly
We repair before recommending unnecessary replacement
Schools often have large installed systems, so replacing an entire system can be expensive and disruptive. We first determine whether the problem is isolated to a device, circuit, battery, communicator, power supply, annunciator or other repairable component.
When replacement is justified, we can help develop a phased modernization plan instead of treating every problem as a full-system replacement.
Austin Fire plan review and permitting
Austin Fire reviews fire alarm plans for new construction and renovation projects. Depending on the scope, a submittal may include drawings, equipment data sheets, standby and alarm current calculations, voltage-drop calculations and other documentation.
See our Austin Fire Alarm Permit & Plan Review Help page for more information.
The Compliance Engine and Austin inspection reporting
Austin uses BRYCER / The Compliance Engine for fire-protection-system inspection reporting. Third-party inspection companies submit applicable inspection reports, deficiencies and repair information through the system.
See our Austin Fire Compliance Engine Help page.
